Welcome to the Metropolitan Police Chigwell Sports Club

It is quite a while since I have had the opportunity to update everyone with club affairs.  The ongoing saga of the future of the clubs continues, but at last we seem to be making some headway.   In May of last year, all interested parties met with a representative from the Metropolitan Police Authority, which is now responsible for all police matters including police buildings.   It was stated by them that now that the Greater London Authority is holding the purse strings of all Londoners, they have to be sure that monies are spent wisely and transparently.   They also stated that they could not just support the continuation of such facilities as sports clubs purely on a historical basis without showing that they are a justifiable expense.   All matters were discussed with follow up advice and it was decided that the best way forward would be to proceed by the four individual clubs forming a company limited by guarantee and leasing the premises from the G.L.A.   This would protect the clubs from threat of closure every time that there was a deficit in the overall police budget, so that staff jobs are safe and members can enjoy the benefits of continued use of the clubs for the duration of the renewable lease which will hopefully be between 15 and 25 years in the first instance.  Financial implications are also part of the ongoing talks, but whatever the outcome I can assure all members that we are in a strong position to be able to cope.

The club continues to be successful which is a credit to the hard work of all staff who assist me in the day to day running of the Club.    Over the past couple of years, I have made a number of staff changes and retained only those who have the necessary ability, loyalty, work ethic and ambition to take this club forward at a time when the need to achieve a sound financial footing is more crucial than ever before.    We have also employed some new staff.  This has also resulted in a more friendly environment.

Club function attendance is at an all time high where we could sell some two or three times over.  A number of functions including the Marquee Night, Halloween Party, Children's Christmas Party, Christmas Carol Concerts, Santa's Grotto, Pantomime and The Metropolitan Police Choir have been provided free of charge to members, which is something that has never been done before.   I am also looking forward to all of the upcoming attractions in 2007 and hope to see many of you there.

Best wishes to you all

Colin Pridige - General Manager

Short history of Chigwell Sports Club

Chigwell Hall, built by Norman Shaw and completed in 1876, was described as "A large modern mansion of red brick, which stands out pleasantly from amidst the surrounding trees". It is a "Grade II listed building of special architectural or historic interest in the Epping Forest District."

Chigwell Hall is in fact set in its own 42 acres of lush grounds, lawns and woodland in abundance, surrounded by beautiful countryside, and spectacular views over London.

It is easily reached by both public and private transport.   Situated on the High Road, Chigwell, just south of the junction with Roding Lane, and opposite the Kings Head Public House, which is supposedly 'The Maypole' as immortalised in Charles Dickens, 'Barnaby Rudge'.

By public transport, Chigwell is served well by bus and underground train, Chigwell Station being just a short walk away (Central Line - Zone 5).

Chigwell Hall boasts its own banqueting suites, bars and diners, as well as excellent sports facilities, & its very own Mega Marquee!  We are licensed to hold Civil Wedding Ceremonies.

We look forward to welcoming you to Chigwell Hall, and if we can be of any further assistance, then please contact us
